Know Your Rights – For Teens

If you’re a teen in California, you have rights. California has some of the strongest laws in the country that guarantee your right to obtain sexual and reproductive health care services, and will pay for many of these services, too.

At any age, you have the right to:

  • Birth control, including emergency contraception
  • Pregnancy testing and prenatal care
  • Abortion services

Starting at age 12, you have the right to:

  • Testing and treatment for STIs/ STDs
  • HIV/AIDS testing

You do not need permission from anyone, including your parents or guardians, or your partner. It is your right to get these health services confidentially – the clinic or doctor cannot tell anyone why you were there – unless you say it’s okay. You can specify what information is okay to share, and what information should be kept confidential.
